Women - Be Savvy When Looking For Cheap Car Insurance

Over the last few years specialist insurance companies that offer car insurance for only women have been rising. As a result, conventional insurance companies have begun to offer specialised packages that cater for women. Is this because it is politically correct to do so? Or are there other factors at play here?
Certainly, insurance companies are businesses that are not worried about being politically correct. The reason that there is a great deal of cheap car insurance for women is because statistics from the UK Home Office and independent researchers have shown women to be safer drivers and involved in less serious accidents. Home Office 2005 statistics showed that there were 6529 male casualties on the UK roads in that year, as opposed to 2962 female casualties. Also, 2007 statistics show that 93 percent of drink-driving convictions were male, while the remaining 7 percent were female.
These are large numbers and are only a few of the statistics that have convinced insurance companies that female drivers are generally a better risk in comparison to males. Many of the statistics are not based on driving style, however, but more along the lines of the frequency of driving. Males spend more time on the road, in general, with jobs that demand it or because they generally drive when a family is going on holiday, a couple is going out etc.
However, the cases of drink-driving and dangerous driving do show that females are more cautious on the road as opposed to men; and the kinds of claims women tend to make are usually only for minor bumps and so forth. Women also tend to buy safer or more conservative vehicles.
This has all resulted in cheap car insurance for women from specialised insurance companies that also include many additional services that are advantageous for women, such as car seat cover insurance; mobile phone locators; 24 hour emergency helplines; handbag cover; female-friendly repair staff or the provision of courtesy cars.
But are the specialised insurance companies really cheaper as opposed to what conventional insurance companies offer women? And are the additional services really necessary?
The latter question is a matter of opinion and the needs of the customer. Handbag insurance can cover as much as £300, and female-friendly repairers may be a bonus but generally only if a woman is single.
The former, however, is not always the case. Because conventional insurance companies in the UK have realised the impact of the statistics they have begun to offer much cheaper car insurance to women in comparison to the specialised companies. While they may not offer handbag insurance, when it comes down to the basic cost it may well be more worth it.
Comparison websites on the internet are one of the best ways to find a good deal, and many of them will also provide the option to search amongst specialised insurance companies. However, women will still have to be savvy and check all the small details of the insurance plan - you don't want to end up paying for services you don't actually need. It is often better to simplify your insurance plan and pay less. This is especially true if you are under 25, as - women or man - under 25's generally get the rawer deal in the UK. Here the statistics work against you (drivers under 25 cause more accidents).
Still, a lady under 25 can probably still get a better deal than a guy; so, shop around and take advantage of your gender.
